Diamond Kid!

Murfreesboro, Ark.–A 100-mile detour turned out to be a profitable excursion for the Detlaff family on July 31, when 12-year-old Michael unearthed a 5.16-carat brown diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.

The Detlaffs were traveling on vacation to Fayetteville, Ark. from their home in Apex, N.C. when they decided to visit the park. Within the first 10 minutes of scanning the search area, Detlaff found the brown diamond on the surface, the eighth largest brown diamond ever found at the park

With this diamond, the current trend continues of visitors finding diamonds on the surface of the search field. Due to good rains this spring, and some especially hard rains in July, many of the recent large diamonds were found right on the surface,” Margi Jenks, park interpreter, said. “Diamonds are a bit heavy for their size, so a good downpour will wash the dirt away, leaving the diamond exposed.”

Detlaff’s jellybean-sized stone is the 328th diamond discovered at the park this year, and the 27th largest diamond found at the site since it became a state park in 1972.

He named his find the “God’s Glory Diamond.”

The stone came from the north end of the search area, near a sign that marks where the 15.33-carat Star of Arkansas was found, a white diamond that is the third largest to ever found at the site. It was discovered in 1956 when the area was a privately operated tourist attraction.

Crater of Diamonds is the only diamond-producing site open to the public in the world. The park’s search area is a 37½ -acres of plowed field that is the eroded surface of the eighth-largest diamond-bearing deposit in the world.

In addition to diamonds, amethyst, garnet, peridot, jasper, agate and quartz also have been found at the park, among other semi-precious gemstones and minerals.

Say Yes! A love story

After sharing her wonderful love story, a south Florida woman became the proud owner of an $11,000 pair of Erica Courtney earrings. In the story of the ups and downs of her relationship–including her fiancé’s unique proposal–for Jewelers Mutual’s “Everlasting Love” contest winnings went to her.

To enter this unique contest, contestants were asked to share what everlasting love meant to them on the contest’s website between April 30 and May 21. Americans voted on the entries and narrowed the field to just five finalists. Jewelers Mutual and Courtney herself then chose the winner based on creativity, originality, and representation of everlasting love.

Ariela Yasova shared the story of her and her fiancé Matthew’s relationship in a story titled, “For Better or Worse, We’re Always Together.”

The couple’s courtship began as a long-distance relationship, which then followed with a medical crisis–two members of Matthew’s family were diagnosed with cancer–that led them to the realization of just how strong their relationship was.

A short time later, Matthew took his girlfriend on her fist Ferris wheel ride and when the car got “stuck” at the top, Matthew pulled out his cell phone loaded with music which reminded him of his girlfriend Yasova and then proposed. She said yes.

The couple’s story received over 1,700 views on the contest website and 379 votes, enough to make them a top five finalist and eventually be chosen as the contest winner.

The pair said one of the first things they will do with their new earrings is get them insured.

Gemfields Emerald Trading Blocked

Recently its been reported that the government of Zambia has barred mining company Gemfields Plc from exporting emeralds for its upcoming sale to Singapore, which is scheduled for June 10 to 14. According to the report, the country’s Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Yamfwa Mukanga told Bloomberg by phone on June 1 that selling gemstones outside of Zambia is not permitted and that the government had blocked Gemfields from exporting emeralds last week.

As Per a previously reached agreement with the government, Gemfields already had agreed to hold its April auction in the Zambian capital of Lusaka but planned on holding the June sale in Singapore. As of now the fate of that auction remained unclear as of Wednesday afternoon.

Currently Gemfields owns a 75 percent stake in Zambia’s Kagem Emerald Mine, which accounts for a bulk of the company’s production, the government holds the remaining 25 percent. Gemfields also has a 50 percent interest in the Kariba amethyst mine in Zambia, with the other half belonging to the government, and mines rubies in Mozambique.

Since 2009, all 11 of Kagem’s auctions have taken place outside of Zambia, in India and Singapore, generating a total of $160 million. The Zambian government see’s this as revenue that is not being generated from within the country, thus eventually having a spill over affect which would also boost its economy through tourism and other means.

Gemfields has said that being forced to sell the emeralds in Zambia only would negatively impact revenues and the overall development of the country’s gemstone sector and place Zambian emeralds at a competitive disadvantage worldwide.

Tiffany & Co. featured in The Great Gatsby

The much anticipated and recently released Great Gatsby film has had much of its fans drooling over the magnificent jewelry pieces worn by its stars.  Amazingly enough, the jewelry worn in the film is based on designs from the coveted Tiffany & Co. Archives.  The style of Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan, was a wonderful representation of the glitz, glamour, and rebellion of the Roaring Twenties. Throughout the film she wore tassel necklaces and jewels with conch pearls. At lavish parties her blonde bob was accessorized with the Savoy, a headdress of diamonds and cultured pearls, and her hands were adorned with a daisy ornament and diamond rings with the renowned Tiffany setting.

“This exuberant, very decorative style [of the 1920’s] constantly comes back as a key point to designers,” Catherine Martin, costume designer of The Great Gatsby, said recently in an interview.

The leading lady isn’t the only one with dazzling accessories. Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, accessories his custom Brooks Brothers shirts with 18k gold oval cuff links. A sterling silver flask which fits easily in the pockets of his tailored linen suits and tuxedo.

The jewelry throughout this film symbolized the story’s themes of wealth and privilege. The makers were instrumental in approaching its design with the utmost care carefully keeping style and luxury in mind. Some of the pieces from the film are featured just below. Enjoy!

Oracle of Omaha sells jewelry

BRK

Who whould have thought, a billionaire Warren Buffett would hopes to sell some jewelry. As shocking as the story sounds, I was a bit perplexed when I first caught wind of multi bilionaire Warren Buffett attempting to sell more than $2 million worth of jewelry to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders when he returns to the sales floor at Borsheim’s on Sunday afternoon.

In his annual letter to shareholders, Buffett informed the share holders that he sold $1.5 million worth of jewelry last year, so he wants to top that. An ambitious move, from a very wise and ambitious man, but the question remains, can he do it?

In the spirit of starting annual traditions, Buffett has sold jewelry at the Berkshire-owned store in west Omaha during each of the past two years during the annual meeting celebrations.

Besides selling jewelry to meet his goal, Buffett plans to become better acquainted with Berkshire shareholders over a few hands of bridge and some dinner at two of his favorite local steak restaurants.

On Saturday at the shareholder meeting, Buffett and Berkshire’s vice chairman Charlie Munger spent several hours answering questions before a crowd of more than 30,000 people regarding the state and direction of the company.
